Sadness is a normal reaction or emotion. Once a person does not receive what they expect or once they lose what they have, they become sad. It is a normal reaction to disappointment, dissatisfaction or frustration. However, if a person feels sad all the time, that is when sadness becomes depression. Too much unexplainable sadness denotes depression. More than half of the teenagers of today experience depression at least once in their lives and have increasing bouts when left untreated. And even kids suffer from childhood depression too.
Yes, that is right. Even children are suffering from childhood depression as well. Anxiety, hurt feelings, home and school problems are the most common causes of childhood depression. The feeling of being misunderstood or misjudged is also a common cause of this depression. Severe sadness can be the effect of guilt, too much anger and hatred. The feeling of depression is sometimes their fault. They may feel uncomfortable about things that happened to them and they are ashamed to tell them to their parents because of fear – fear to be misunderstood. As a consequence, they also fear that love and acceptance might be affected.
Children are prone to childhood depression because they do not have the capacity to distinguish between the cause and effect. You need to educate them about the reality that bad things happen to people and it is normal. Aside from that, you need to reassure your children that even if they commit unlikable behaviors, they will be loved unconditionally.
Depression develops when sadness becomes profound. It becomes severe when it interferes with your kids daily activities. The inability to cope up with sadness sometimes leads to depression. This depression is not that easy to treat. One might need professional advice or therapy to be able to remove the depression or at least cope up with it.
Parents should perform a great role in dealing with the childhood depression of their kids. This is usually experienced during puberty. Parents must always be vigilant in almost all steps of their kid’s life especially during the puberty stage. Teenagers have the same biochemical reactions and almost half of the teenagers who suffer from anxiety disorder have had childhood depression history. It is very important for you to perform your roles as parents as early as your babies approach the childhood stage.
Treating childhood depression can be tough. This is because most of the causes of their depression fall into negative thoughts and unrealistic reasons. The treatment usually involves talking to somebody who has knowledgeable and has great experience in treating about depression. Cognitive therapy is one of the most common and effective treatment for childhood depression. This treatment is short term but effective. However, it requires taking medications which makes your kids brain a chance to reframe their thoughts to a realistic one.
Everybody deserves to be happy, specially your children. Never give your children a chance to hate life as early as their childhood. The feeling of hurt and blues are nothing but normal but as they progress, they can be the cause of a major problem which is childhood depression. You must remember that depression does not just go away by itself.
You as a parent must perform all your duties to shield your kids from getting it. You must be encouraging, responsive and supportive to your children’s moods and emotions. The world is full of beautiful thoughts and positive opportunities. Ask your kids not to focus their attention on things that are not productive. Always be optimistic to enjoy life more.
